Frequently asked questions

What is Bookmarks?

Bookmarks is an online research community. An online research community is a community of individuals with similar interests, and experiences, who have voluntarily chosen to participate in online research studies about various topics related to their common interests.

What information is required to become a Bookmarks member?

In order to join Bookmarks you must complete a brief member profile survey. Your member profile will include basic contact information and vital data such as gender and age. It will also ask you several questions about books and reading. The questions included in the member profile survey allow us to ensure that the panel is not only reflective of UK readers but also helps us to make your Bookmarks experience more relevant to you.

What will I be invited to do as a Bookmarks member?

Bookmarks members will be invited to participate in surveys, quick polls and discussions about books and reading. On occasion we may also invite you to attend discussion groups in person. All activities are of course optional.

How do I complete a survey?

You will be emailed a unique URL address for each survey you are invited. Simply click on the URL included in the email or alternatively cut and paste the address into a web browser of your choice and complete the survey form online. Survey length is closely controlled to minimize the use of your time.

What topics will the surveys cover?

The surveys will cover a variety of topics about books and reading, including your opinions on book covers, authors, genres, digital reading, fiction and non-fiction and children’s books. Bookmarks members will only be notified of surveys we think are relevant to your own interests, based on what you tell us in your member profile survey, or surveys that we consider to be relevant to everyone.

Are there any prizes for completing activities on Bookmarks?

Yes – you do receive prizes for completing activities on Bookmarks. To show our appreciation, you will automatically receive points for completing surveys, polls and discussion rooms on Bookmarks. These points equate to different levels, each of which gets a different prize. If you have reached a new level, you will be contacted via email at the end of the month within which you have moved up a level. You will also be automatically entered into our Monthly Prize Draw when you take part in an activity. Please click here for full terms and conditions.

How can I be sure you got my responses?

If you would like to ensure that your responses have been received, you can click on the survey link when you are done. A message stating that you have already completed the survey will appear.

How frequently do I have to participate?

It is completely up to you! You will receive between 2 to 5 surveys a month as well as invitations to participate in discussions. We encourage you to participate in as many studies as you are invited to. Each month just for participating in and completing our surveys you will be entered into our ongoing competition draws.

How long will I have to complete each survey?

You will typically have anywhere from 72 hours to one week to complete each survey.

How will my responses to the surveys be used?

Your responses will be evaluated along with other respondents to the survey as a whole and will be used to input into Penguin Random House’s decision making. We will also share some of the survey results with Bookmarks members and let you know how we’re using them.

Will my profile information be sold to other companies?

I’ve been notified that someone has replied to my post. How do I see this comment?

If you receive a notification letting you know someone has responded to your post, click on your notification and if you are already logged in you will be taken to the relevant comment. If you click on a notification and it doesn't take you to your specific post, this is because you either weren't logged into your account, the activity has since closed or that specific comment is too far down in the activity to be searchable.

To find the comment, please load the entire page by scrolling to the bottom of the page, then press 'ctrl' + 'f', which will bring up a search bar where you can enter your screen name. This will then search for and take you to the comment itself.
